Al Roberts

Biography

Al Roberts, born and raised in Milwaukee, began his musical career at the age of 10, playing banjo and guitar. After seven years of pick and strum he became enthralled with the push and pull style of the concertina. And in no time Al mastered the instrument and began playing neighborhood weddings. He formed his first band in 1962 and began playing in the clubs and dance spots providing the Slovenian sound Milwaukee dance fans wanted to hear. The popularity of the Slovenian style is the most succesfull in the Cleveland and Milwaukee area. In January of 1964, Al Roberts released his first recording “Tell Me A Story” It was an instant hit. Another record “Fleet Avenue Polka” was soon followed. Al Roberts introducees to his style another instrument, the chromatic accordion.  

Al Roberts, geboren en getogen in Milwaukee, begon zijn muzikale loopbaan door banjo en gitaar te spelen op 10 jarige leeftijd. Na zeven jaar van gepluk en getokkel op de snaren werd hij enthousiast met de push-en pull-stijl van de concertina. En in no time beheerste Al het instrument. Hij begon in de buurt te spelen op bruiloften. Hij vormde zijn eerste band in 1962 en begon vervolgens op te treden in de clubs en dance-spots waar de Milwaukee dansliefhebbers de Slovenian sound wilden horen. De populariteit van de Slovenian style is namelijk het meest succesvol in de Cleveland en Milwaukee gebieden. In januari van 1964 maakte Al Roberts zijn eerste opname "Tell Me A Story". Het werd zeer snel een hit. Een andere plaat "Fleet Avenue Polka" werd daarna al spoedig uitgebracht. Al Roberts introduceerde in zijn muziekstijl nog een ander instrument, chromatische accordeon.
